Eclipses

Quiet and cold like a winter river 

trickling beneath the snow and ice

turquoise light blue 

deep dark blue 

slowly and swiftly moving below 

carving out a pathway, an opening in the ice 

purple deep blue sky 

quiet and cold

everything is asleep or sleepy and slow 

a faint star twinkles 

a pinecone crackles as it drops through the branches to the ground below 

a squirrel, a black fox, a crow scurry about looking for a morsel

Trees sway in the wind 

black silhouettes against the periwinkle dusk sky

or is it dawn? 

is it the end of the day or the beginning?

or the beginning of the night or the end? 

no matter what, the beginning means an ending 

there’s no escaping that

Little losses, sometimes big

little gains or great

every moment, every day 

whether the start or the end, or both 

they always go hand in hand 

No matter what, the snow melts

the river flows, the water moves

rushes, carves, trickles 

cleanses, disrupts, refreshes 

destroys, gives life

No matter what, the trees sway

the roots go deep

beneath the snow and soil

they are one with earth and water 

quietly the seeds are being sown 

collective, communal

activation, active 

habit, action 

voice

I feel in my body mind soul 

anxious nervous grasping

angry frustrated fear

paralyzed guilt resolve

uncertainty deep ache and love

hopeless chaos crumbling

determination fight 

desire vision 

calling in the unknown 

remembering 

Before you were born 

you were moss that covered the earth

stars that twinkled in the sky

trees with roots that go deep

a thread in the network below the forest floor

a molecule of water in the rushing mountain river
